
The Tazewell High School football team used a 23-point fourth quarter on Friday to rally and defeat richlands in come-from-behind fashion, besting the blue tornadoes 56-37 in a Southwest District matchup at Ernie Hicks Stadium. The 56-points is the most points ever scored by a Tazewell team in the series.
Tazewell (4-3, 2-1 SWD) trailed richlands (1-6, 0-2 SWD) 37-33 before scoring three touchdowns in the final eleven minutes to gain a decisive advantage over a resilient blue tornado squad.
The two teams combined for 955 yards of total offense, with the Bulldogs recording 408 passing yards and 146 rushing yards. The Bulldogs benefitted from big plays for two of its eight touchdowns, scoring on plays of 80 and 67 yards.
Sophomore quarterback Carter Creasy completed 26-of-40 passes for 408 yards and six touchdowns with one interception. The 408 yards is a new single-game school record. The previous record was set in 2012 when Cody McCann passed for 387 yards in a loss to Giles.
Sophomore wide receiver Logan McDonald set a career-high with 144 yards receiving and three touchdowns on 8 receptions – the three receiving touchdowns ties the single-game record. McDonald has seven touchdown receptions this season.
Senior wide receiver Cassius Harris had 146 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns and also caught nine passes. Harris now has 182 receptions for his career. He ranks eighth all-time in VHSL history for the statistic.
Junior running back Kaizon Taylor had seven receptions for 56 yards and 47 yards rushing and a touchdown. Taylor also added 12 ½ tackles, 3 sacks and 4 tackles for loss on defense.
Senior wide receiver Braxton Dowdy had 103 yards from scrimmage – including an 80-yard touchdown reception.
Junior linebacker Brock Alley finished with 8 tackles. Senior defensive end James Huffman had a forced fumble and a big fourth down stop in the fourth quarter, while freshman linemen Jashon Taylor had 4 ½ tackles and recovered a fumble. AyvRee Zeigler also recovered a richlands fumble.
For richlands, Senior quarterback Dylan Brown totaled 365 in total offense of richlands 401 yards.
